Sunseeker X5 Setup Guide: From Unboxing to Your First Mow

The Sunseeker X5 brings wire-free mowing to lawns up to 0.5 acre. Instead of installing a perimeter cable, you create a virtual boundary that tells the mower where to work. Its AONaviâ„¢ navigation system combines RTK-GNSS satellite positioning with VSLAM visual technology to support accurate navigation.

Getting started involves preparing the lawn, installing the charging station and RTK antenna, connecting the app, and mapping your mowing areas. Setup time depends on your yard’s layout, antenna placement, and battery level, so allow extra time for charging and additional zones.

This guide covers the U.S. Sunseeker X5, rather than X5 Gen 2. Keep your supplied manual nearby and follow its model-specific requirements and the current app instructions throughout setup.

Quick Overview

  1. Clear the lawn and identify boundaries and obstacles.
  2. Install the charging station and RTK antenna.
  3. Power on and charge the mower.
  4. Connect the mower to the Sunseeker app.
  5. Use the app to drive the mower along the boundary and save the map.
  6. Add no-go areas, connect work zones, and check the first mow.

Before You Start: What You Need

Have the following ready before beginning:

  • Your X5 and installation components. Check the mower, charging station, RTK equipment, power supplies, cables, and mounting hardware against the packing list.
  • The correct app. Use the download QR code in your manual, then create or sign in to your account.
  • A compatible smartphone. Enable Bluetooth and grant the permissions requested during setup.
  • A 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi connection. Have your network name and password ready, and check coverage at the charging location.
  • Suitable power and mounting locations. Plan these for the charging station and RTK equipment according to the supplied instructions.

Step 1: Prepare the Lawn

Walk the entire mowing area before installing or mapping anything. Remove loose stones, branches, toys, hoses, and other items that could interfere with operation. Keep children and pets away during installation, mapping, and the first test run.

If the grass is overgrown, use a conventional mower to bring it down to the starting height recommended in your X5 manual. Trim grass extending over paths or borders so you can clearly see where the virtual boundary should go.

Identify flower beds, raised roots, ponds, steps, and drop-offs. Plan exclusion areas and any physical protection required by the manual before mapping. Obstacle avoidance does not replace these precautions.

Step 2: Install the Charging Station and RTK Antenna

Choose the Charging Station Location

Choose firm, level ground with a clear approach for the mower to leave and return. Keep the station near a suitable power source and within Wi-Fi coverage.

Follow the X5 manual’s specified clearances around the station. Secure it using the supplied hardware, and route cables as instructed so they remain protected from the cutting area.

Before continuing, check that the station is stable and that the mower can reach it without crossing obstacles or unsafe edges.

Position the RTK Antenna

The RTK antenna needs a clear view of the sky. Avoid locations directly beneath dense tree canopy or roof overhangs, and locations close to tall structures that obstruct the sky.

Use the mounting arrangement supplied or approved for your model. Wall mounting may require a compatible accessory, so check the manual before choosing that installation method.

Secure the antenna and complete the required power and cable connections. Once the equipment is powered, check the positioning status in the app or the indicators described in the manual. Resolve positioning warnings before starting a map.

Step 3: Power On and Charge the X5

Remove shipping protection as directed in the manual, including any protective film covering the cameras. Check that the cameras, sensors, and charging contacts are clean and unobstructed.

Follow the model-specific power-on instructions and position the mower on the charging station so the contacts meet correctly. Confirm that charging has started using the app or display and the relevant indicator-light instructions.

Follow the prompts to enter or set the mower’s PIN. Before mapping, charge the battery to the level required by the manual or app. Starting with a full charge can help reduce interruptions when mapping a large or complicated boundary.

Step 4: Connect the Sunseeker App

  1. Keep your phone close to the powered-on mower and enable Bluetooth.
  2. Connect your phone to the compatible 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network you intend to use for setup.
  3. Open the app and follow the add-device instructions. Scan the mower’s identification QR code when prompted.
  4. Complete network setup and bind the mower to your account.
  5. Check for any required setup steps, firmware updates, or positioning warnings before continuing.

If pairing fails, check the Wi-Fi frequency, network password, signal strength, Bluetooth permissions, and the app’s instructions before trying again.

Step 5: Map Your Lawn

You map the mower’s route, rather than your phone’s walking route. Use the app’s remote control to drive the X5 along your lawn boundary while following the on-screen instructions. The mower records the route used to define its virtual working area.

Check Before Mapping

Confirm that:

  • The battery meets the mapping requirement shown in the app or manual.
  • The mower is connected and reports a suitable positioning status.
  • The cameras and sensors are clean and uncovered.
  • You have planned the boundary and exclusion areas.
  • Passages and boundary setbacks meet the requirements for your model.

Record and Save the Boundary

Start mapping in the app and guide the mower steadily around the intended mowing area. Maintain the required distance from walls, fences, flower beds, and unsafe edges.

Stay close enough to maintain the control connection. Do not lift or carry the mower while it is recording a boundary.

Follow the app’s instructions to close and save the working area. If the route needs correction, use the available correction controls or repeat the affected mapping step as directed. Review the saved boundary before starting an automatic run.

What Happens When Satellite Reception Becomes Weak?

RTK-GNSS and VSLAM work together to support navigation where satellite reception varies. Visual assistance can help in partially obstructed areas, but performance still depends on the surroundings and visibility.

If the app reports a positioning problem, stop and resolve it rather than assuming the mower can continue accurately.

Step 6: Add No-Go Areas, Connect Zones, and Set a Schedule

Add No-Go Areas

Use the app’s no-go-area workflow to exclude flower beds, raised roots, and other areas the mower should avoid. Follow the prescribed mapping method and boundary setbacks.

Near ponds, steps, or drop-offs, use the physical safeguards required by the manual as well as virtual exclusions.

Connect Separate Lawn Areas

The U.S. X5 product page lists support for up to 100 zones. For separate lawns the mower can physically reach, follow the app’s instructions to create work areas and connecting routes.

A connection on the map cannot make the mower cross steps, closed gates, or other impassable barriers. Check the complete route before scheduling automatic movement between areas.

Choose a Cutting Height and Schedule

The U.S. X5’s listed cutting-height range is 1.6–3.2 inches. Adjust the height using the method specified in your model’s manual.

Start with a setting appropriate to the current grass height, then make gradual changes as the lawn settles into regular maintenance.

Use the app to select mowing days and times. Review the rain-sensor and rain-delay settings so you understand how wet-weather interruptions affect the schedule.

Check the First Mow

Watch the first automatic run to confirm that the saved boundary, no-go areas, and connecting routes work as intended. Pay particular attention to narrow passages and turns, and confirm that the mower can return to its charging station.

If it stops, leaves a planned area, or cannot dock, pause operation and check the app’s message before changing the setup.

Some edges may still need occasional manual trimming, depending on your lawn layout and the required boundary clearances.

You can also check whether your yard is ready for a robot mower for a broader review of your lawn’s layout and access.

Once the first mow looks right, follow our first 30 days with the Sunseeker X5 guide to settle your schedule, coverage checks, and routine care.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Sunseeker X5 Need a Boundary Wire?

No. The X5 uses a mapped virtual boundary instead of a perimeter wire. Its charging station and RTK equipment still need to be installed correctly.

How Long Does Setup Take?

Setup time depends on your yard and installation conditions. Antenna mounting, charging, network setup, and mapping additional work areas all affect the total time. Allow time to check the first automatic run as well.

Can the X5 Work on Slopes?

The X5 has all-wheel drive and a listed maximum slope capability of 60% / 30°. Follow the manual’s separate requirements for boundaries and installation areas. The maximum mowing slope is not a recommended slope for the charging station or every lawn edge.

To check the grade of your own lawn before setting boundaries, see how to measure your lawn’s slope.

What If the Mower Stops During Mapping?

Read the app or display message first. Check battery level, positioning status, obstacles, and the control connection.

Follow the instructions to recover or restart mapping. Do not assume that every pause is a normal recharge stop.

Can I Change the Map After Setup?

Yes. The app supports map management, including changes to boundaries and exclusion areas. Follow the workflow available for your app and firmware version, and check the next run after making changes.

Ready for Your First Mow?

A reliable setup starts with a stable charging station, a well-positioned RTK antenna, and a carefully checked map. Once those are in place, you can adjust the schedule to maintain your lawn with less hands-on work.
