Is Your Yard Ready? Five Question Check

Answer five questions about your lawn and get a model suggestion, or an honest answer that a robot mower is not the right fit yet.

Robot mowers have got good enough that the interesting question is no longer whether they work. It is whether they work on your particular lawn, with its slope, its tree, and the corner where the hose always sits.

Short answer

Most US yards up to about 0.75 acre, with slopes under 70% and reasonable sky access or LiDAR navigation for shaded ground, are robot mower ready. Five checks will tell you which category yours falls into.

Check 1: Size

Size is the first filter because it is the one that cannot be worked around with technique. Every model carries a rated area, and running a mower well beyond its rating means it never quite finishes.

Measure the grass, not the lot. Driveway, house footprint, beds and paving all come out of the number, and most people find the mowed area is smaller than the deed suggests.

Check 2: Slope

Slope is the check people guess at and should measure. It is stated as a percentage, where 100% is a 45 degree angle, so the numbers sound steeper than they look.

  • Up to 30%: within reach of every model, including the X3 Plus.
  • Up to 42%, or 22 degrees: the V3 and S4 handle this.
  • Up to 60%, or 30 degrees: the X5, using all wheel drive and off road tyres.
  • Up to 70%, or 35 degrees: the X7, the steepest in the range.
  • Steeper than 70%: not a robot mowing job.

To check without equipment, measure a rise over a known horizontal run. A rise of 3 feet across 10 feet is a 30% slope. Phone level apps do the same job well enough for a decision like this.

Check 3: Shade and Sky Access

This one surprises people, because it has nothing to do with cutting and everything to do with knowing where the mower is.

Mowers that navigate by satellite need a reasonably clear view of the sky. Dense canopy, a tall fence line, or a house wall on the wrong side can degrade that signal, and the mower loses position rather than losing power.

Two routes around it:

  • LiDAR navigation scans the surroundings actively rather than relying on the sky, which is why the S4 is the pick for heavily shaded lawns. It even supports night operation, since LiDAR emits its own signal.
  • Fusion navigation combines satellite positioning with vision, which handles partial shade well.

Check 4: Obstacles

Modern mowers detect and route around obstacles rather than bumping into them. The question is not whether yours can, but how much work you want it doing.

Fixed obstacles are easy. Trees, beds, furniture and play equipment get mapped once and become part of the layout.

The awkward category is the movable one: hoses, toys, dog bowls, garden tools. These are detected, and every detour is time and battery. A minute clearing the lawn before a mow is the difference between a clean run and a cautious one.

Check 5: Edges and Boundaries

Where the lawn stops matters more than most buyers expect.

  • Fenced or walled: the simplest case, and a firm physical boundary.
  • Kerbs and paths: straightforward. Mapping handles the line.
  • Open onto a road, water or a drop: workable, and worth setting as a no go zone during mapping rather than trusting the edge to hold.
  • Lawn running under a fence into a neighbour's: a mapped boundary is the answer.

A Few Things Worth Knowing Before You Buy

  • Grass type. The S4 is not compatible with Zoysia or St. Augustine, and lawn height needs to be under 9 cm when you start.
  • Cut it first. A robot mower maintains a lawn rather than reclaiming one. Bring an overgrown lawn down conventionally before the first run.
  • Setup time. Most yards map in about 20 to 25 minutes, walking the mower around by app.
  • Weather. All models have a rain sensor. LiDAR navigation is not suited to rain or fog, so the S4 will wait it out.
  • Narrow passages. The S4 and V3 cross gaps of about 80 cm, which covers most side returns.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know how big my lawn actually is?

Measure the grass rather than the property. A satellite map tool with an area function gets you close enough, as long as you exclude the house, drive, paving and beds.

Will it work on a slope?

Up to 70%, which is 35 degrees, on the X7. The V3 and S4 handle 42%, the X5 60%, and the X3 Plus 30%. Measure the steepest part rather than the average.

What if my lawn is shaded by big trees?

Choose LiDAR navigation. The S4 scans its surroundings rather than relying on a clear view of the sky, which is what makes canopy a problem for satellite based systems.

Can it handle a lawn with lots of obstacles?

Yes, fixed obstacles get mapped and avoided. Loose items are detected too, though clearing them first gives a faster and tidier run.

Do I need a boundary wire?

No. The current range is wire free, with boundaries set during app mapping rather than buried around the lawn.

What if my yard is bigger than 0.75 acre?

Zoning is the usual approach: map the areas that matter and schedule them. Worth a conversation rather than assuming it is out of range.
