Five Year Cost Calculator
Enter your yard size and what you pay now. The result compares five years of lawn service against a one off mower purchase.
The sticker price on a robot mower is the objection. It is also the wrong number to look at on its own, because the alternative is not free. A lawn service is a bill that arrives every month, every season, for as long as you own the house.
Against a typical US lawn service, a Sunseeker robot mower pays for itself in roughly one season at weekly mowing, or about two seasons if you currently mow every other week. Over five years the gap runs into thousands of dollars.
What a Lawn Service Actually Costs
National pricing data from LawnStarter, covering July 2025 to July 2026, puts professional mowing at $43 to $70 per visit, averaging $56. Broken down by lawn size:
| Lawn size | Cost per visit |
|---|---|
| Up to 1/4 acre | $41 to $61 |
| 1/4 to 1/2 acre | $49 to $69 |
| 1/2 to 1 acre | $59 to $114 |
| 1 to 2 acres | $99 to $264 |
Per visit, that is easy to absorb. Across a season it is a different figure entirely, and across five years it stops being a rounding error.
The Five Year Comparison
| Lawn size | Service, 5 years | Sunseeker model | Mower cost | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Up to 1/4 acre | about $7,100 | S4, rated to 0.25 acre | $1,299.99 | about $5,500 in your favour |
| 1/4 to 1/2 acre | about $8,300 | X5, rated to 0.5 acre | $1,499.99 | about $6,500 in your favour |
| 1/2 to 1 acre | about $12,100 | X7, rated to 0.75 acre | $2,099.99 | about $9,700 in your favour |
The differences already include replacement blades, covered below. They do not include electricity, which is billed at your own utility rate and is a small line item next to everything else here.
If you mow every other week rather than weekly, halve the service column. The payback period roughly doubles, to about two seasons, and the five year gap is still measured in thousands.
Run Your Own Numbers
Regional pricing varies widely, so the useful version of this comparison is the one built from your own invoice.

What Running a Robot Mower Actually Costs
The ongoing cost is smaller than most people expect, and it is dominated by one consumable.
- Blades. A pack of 12 blades with screws currently runs $59.99 and fits the X7, S4, X5, X3 Plus and V3. On a new or taller lawn, blades are typically changed every one to two months, settling to longer intervals once the lawn is under control. There is also an S4 bundle that adds a three year blade kit for a small amount over the mower alone.
- Electricity. The mower charges from a standard outlet. The S4 charges in about 80 minutes and mows for about 90 minutes per charge.
- Storage. Optional. A garage cover is available for each model if the base station sits in the open.
- Your time. Realistically, a few minutes a week clearing the lawn and occasionally cleaning the deck.
There is no fuel, no oil, no seasonal tune up, and no scheduling.
The Costs That Do Not Show Up on the Invoice
A weekly service invoice is only part of what the arrangement costs you.
The cut is weekly, whether the grass needs it or not
Grass does not grow to a schedule. A service cuts on its rotation, which means removing a lot at once in spring and turning up unnecessarily in a dry August. A robot mower cuts little and often, which is closer to how turf actually prefers to be maintained, and the clippings are fine enough to fall back in as mulch.
Rescheduling
Rain moves the visit. A missed week means a heavier cut the following week. Nothing about this is anyone's fault, and it is still friction you carry.
The tidy up after the tidy up
Edges the mower deck cannot reach, clippings on the drive, gates left open. Small things, weekly.
Your own time, if you mow it yourself
If the honest comparison is against your own Saturday rather than a service, an hour a week across a 28 week season is roughly 28 hours a year, and about 140 hours over five years. Put whatever value on that you like. It is not zero.
When a Lawn Service Still Makes More Sense
There are cases where the arithmetic does not favour the mower, and it is worth being straight about them.
- Your lawn is larger than about 0.75 acre and cannot be split into workable zones.
- Slopes exceed 70%, which is 35 degrees, and beyond what the X7 handles.
- You want full grounds care rather than mowing: hedges, beds, leaf clearing, fertiliser.
- The property is a short term rental or a house you are about to sell.
Everything else is a size and terrain question, which our robot lawn mower buying guide works through in detail.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long until a robot mower pays for itself?
Against weekly professional mowing at mid range national pricing, roughly one season. Against every other week mowing, roughly two. The variable that moves this most is how often you currently pay someone, not which model you choose.
What happens if I sell the house?
The mower goes with you, or stays as part of the sale. Either way it is an asset rather than a spent subscription, which is the structural difference between buying and paying monthly.
What are the maintenance costs?
Mainly blades, at $59.99 for a pack of 12 with screws, changed every one to two months on a new or taller lawn and less often once the lawn is established. Beyond that, charging and occasional cleaning.
Do I need to replace the battery?
Batteries are consumables in every cordless product, and the interval depends on use and climate. Sunseeker mowers carry a two year warranty, and replacement parts including blades, wheels and casters can be ordered directly.
Is a robot mower actually better for the lawn?
Cutting little and often removes less leaf per pass than a weekly service cut, and the fine clippings drop back as mulch rather than being bagged. Most owners notice the difference in density before they notice it in the invoice.
Does it work if my lawn is shaded or complicated?
Shade is a navigation question rather than a mowing question. Our guides to mowing under trees and LiDAR versus RTK navigation cover it properly.
